Kai Smart

Cherished Memories from Friends & Family

About Kai

Some people move through the world and leave it exactly as they found it. Kai Smart was not one of those people. He was the kind of person you meet once and never forget. Curious about everything, afraid of nothing, and vastly interested in every single person he came across. He was possessed with the ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room, and he did it without even trying.

Kai lived more in 23 years than most people manage in a lifetime. He competed at the highest levels of freestyle skiing, graduated with honours from UBC, directed films that screened internationally, traversed glaciers in Kazakhstan, and travelled solo throughout the world. He was always chasing something deeper, whether that was a better understanding of the world, a harder line on the mountain, or a more honest way to tell a story.

But none of that is really what made Kai who he was. What made Kai who he was is harder to put into words. It was the way he listened. The way he showed up. The way he made everyone around him feel like they belonged. He was one of those people the world desperately needed more of.
